Project Assistance: Broadway Family Medicine Clinic

Tom assisted his mentor, Peyton Scott Russell, to help install a poly-tab mural in the newly built medical clinic in north Minneapolis in early 2021. Tom helped with installing a wallpaper-like material known as ‘poly-tab’ onto the walls of the clinic.

Over the course of five days, Tom, Peyton and new intern Taelor Yang, completed the installation of the poly-tab mural. The mural was created in Peyton Scott Russell’s art studio in Northeast Minneapolis, which was later transported to the clinic.

“This was my first time ever working with poly-tab. I learned so much about it during the installation. I’ve acquired many different techniques about the medium. I’ve also learned about a few artistic techniques that were later added to the mural when we finished the installation.”

Project Assistance: Whittier Elementary School

Tom assisted his mentor, Peyton Scott Russell, with the installation of a poly-tab mural located at Whittier Elementary School in South Minneapolis in 2021. Over the course of three days, Tom and Peyton spent most of their time on a scissor lift to install the mural. Peyton created the poly-tab mural in his art studio in Northeast Minneapolis and was transporter to the mural site for installation.

“This was a fun installation to participate in. I’ve already have had some experience with poly-tabbing with helping assist with the Broadway Clinic mural. I believe the challenge with this job was was working with a limited amount of space in the scissor lift. Also, the heat was a big factor for the first few hours of each working session. Every time the school children would come outside for recess, they would often comment or ask questions about the mural. I could tell they enjoyed seeing the installation process.”

Aerosol Skull

“I painted this skull in a friend’s basement as a commissioned mural in 2019. I loved how it turned out! I really enjoy painting realism with aerosol, especially objects that I’ve never painted before.”

Colorful Rose

“I painted this colorful rose in the parking lot of the Standish Cafe in South Minneapolis in 2020. This was painted on a wooden structure that holds the company’s dumpster. Although the wooden structure has been weathered down over time, I’m still very pleased with how it turned out. I’m a huge fan of painting floral and other plant designs.”

Calvin and Hobbes Mural

“I personally am a huge fan of the comic book Calvin and Hobbes. I painted this mural in a friend’s gym at his house. He wanted to include Calvin in his ‘Spaceman Spiff’ suit preforming an ‘arm bar hold’ on Hobbes. He also wanted to include a galaxy background. I painted this mural in 2019 with all aerosol. “

 StopHouse Mural

“I helped execute this mural with one of my mural crews which I belong to. This mural was done on the garage of a local record label named Stophouse Music Group. My main role in this group collaboration was to focus on painting the multicolored fonts reading ‘Stop House.’ I also assisted with some of the background, along with the gray lettering on the top of the production reading 'Stop House.’ This mural was produced by 3CatMural based in Minneapolis.”
